 Chiropractic - What is it?
Chiropractic is a natural, gentle, healing art that recognises the body's own natural healing abilities. Chiropractic literally means "done by hand" or "manipulation". It is therefore a form of normalisation of the skeletal structure, particularly the spine. It is not a branch of medicine but a separate health system that does not use drugs or surgery.
Chiropractors are specially trained to evaluate the musculoskeletal and nervous systems and determine what role problems with these systems play in overall health.
Many types of joint pain are caused or aggravated by abnormal movement or restriction of the joints (subluxations). Chiropractors correct or improve these mechanical abnormalities of the joints, muscles and nerves.
The treatment consists of specific manual techniques (adjustments), and supportive measures such as massage and stretching, and advice on posture and exercises, to improve and restore normal movement.
In the world today, chiropractic is recognised as the largest and most well trained profession for the conservative, non-invasive care of neuromusculoskeletal problems and overall wellness.

What is subluxation?
A subluxation occurs when a fixation or misalignment of an articulation causes nerve irritation and interference of the nerve impulses that flow through your body to and from the brain.

What will happen?
On your first visit, a thorough case history of your complaint is performed. This may include details of other health problems and your past medical history, as these may be relevant.
The chiropractor will then examine you and use a range of procedures to assess the state of your spine and joints. X-rays may be suggested if it is felt appropriate, as they can provide a lot of helpful information.
If it is indicated, treatment can be begun immediately. Treatment primarily consists of adjustments; carefully directed and controlled impulses of movement in a precise direction to a joint that is fixed, locked-up or not moving properly.
Most problems take more than one visit to resolve, so usually your chiropractor will try to give you some idea of how many visits it should take to attain a maximum benefit.
The chiropractors are always ready to advise whether or not treatment may be of benefit, so do feel free to phone the clinic (even if you haven't been before) and ask.

The chiropractic principle
Chiropractic works on the principle that disturbances of the nervous system may affect health. These disturbances may be caused by derangements within the musculoskeletal system. By maintaining optimum structure and function of the nervous system chiropractors help the body attain optimum health.

What conditions are treated?

Chiropractic treatment is helpful for most joint problems, but particularly:
Low back pain
Joint stiffness
Sciatica and disc problems
Neck, shoulder and arm pain
Headaches, migraines and dizziness
Pins and needles or numbness in the limbs

It can also be utilised to help treat:
Arthritis
Scoliosis
Muscular pain
Infantile colic
Sports injuries
Sprains and strains
Back pain in pregnancy
Childhood growing pains
Repetitive strain injuries

What about training?

The Spanish Chiropractors Association only accepts as members chiropractors who have completed a recognised degree course. There are no colleges of chiropractic in Spain, so all registered chiropractors must have studied in foreign countries. These are currently six year, full time degree courses.

All chiropractors at the clinic are members of the Spanish Chiropractors Association.
